ABOUT J. THORN
Yes, I’m the “Authors on a Train” guy, but I started my publishing journey back in 2009. I had a dream of supporting my wife and two kids by selling words, but I came up a bit short in that first year, earning a royalty check for $19.26. But since then, I’ve slowly built an author platform that allowed me to walk away from my day job in 2017—from struggling writer to career author.
Over the past few years, I’ve discovered the power of collaboration and how a small group of people with a shared vision can accomplish anything.
I’ve been lucky to collaborate with so many incredible writers over the years, learning from them and implementing their advice to become better at what I do. From co-written novels to the “Authors on a Train” trips, to the “Night of the Writing Dead” and “Rock Apocalypse” retreats, I’ve grown to understand the power of keeping a tight group of friends and mentors. ABOUT CRYS CAIN
When I published my first book, I did almost everything wrong. My top mistakes:
- I forgot to change the title on the cover to my title
- I forgot to check that my pen name didn’t already exist
- I didn’t have a mailing list
- I didn’t run the manuscript past anyone to catch typos
To be fair, I didn’t expect my book to sell anything. My goal was more about getting past the fear of hitting the publishing button. But when I unexpectedly sold $20 that first day (without telling anyone the book existed!), those mistakes loomed large.
If I’d had a crew of writer friends to check me, I would have started out much stronger.
I’d made it pretty far as an author in the next two years. 2018 was my first (and so far only) 6-figure year. But I knew I needed more, and when J. started his mastermind, I jumped in with both feet.
I’ve been part of plenty of writers groups, but I often either felt like a minnow lost in the ocean or a platypus trying to hang out in the duck pond. As a minnow, I could absorb a lot of valuable information, but have no idea how to build connections in the swiftly changing crowd. As a platypus, excited about all the new tech and venues and genres available to us, I was very confusing to the one-genre, KU only crew I was hanging out with.
I went from unemployed, living in my parents’ spare room with my husband, new baby and two dogs to loving life as a full-time writer in a beautiful house in Costa Rica. I love how everyone’s path is different, and I can’t wait to talk to you about your unique skills, dreams, and your path to success.
